BABA JOBE - GAMBIA'S CONSUL GENERAL IN QATAR?

Reliable sources close to the Public Service Commission (PSC), has disclosed
to the Independent the appointment of Baba Jobe, chairman of the defunct July
22nd Movement as Consul General to the Emirate of Qatar in the Persian Gulf,
which until then has been covered by the Gambian embassy in Jeddah, Saudi
Arabia.

According to our sources, Mr. Jobe's appointment letter dated October 16th
2000, also indicated the appointment of one Yahya Njie as his financial
attache. Mr. Jobe, who is a close associate of President Jammeh was until his
new appointment an assistant secretary at the Office of the President.
Attempts by this reporter to get confirmation from the Department of State
for Foreign Affairs proved futile as there was no official able or willing to
confirm or deny the appointment.

Both the Public Service Commission chairman and the permanent secretary at
the Personnel Management Office (PMO) were also not available for comment.
However a PSC official who confirmed the appointment, said he was not given
the 'green light' to talk to the press. When contacted, Baba Jobe said he is
yet to receive his letter of appointment. 'It is better for you to talk to
the Department of State for External Affairs.

They are responsible,' he added. Baba Jobe, was born in Karantaba Village,
Jarra West District, a son of the late Alhajie Kajali Jobe, who was said to
be an influential figure during the former PPP government. Mr. Jobe, who did
part of his elementary education in Pakalinding Primary School before being
sent to Libya for Arabic education on scholarship was reportedly sponsored
through the help of Alhajie Yaya Ceesay former PPP member of parliament for
Jarra West.

He was also a member of the Movement for Justice in Africa (MOJA- G) and was
said to have been arrested on several occasions by the former regime. He
returned to The Gambia from Libya in 1994, following the military coup led by
then Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh, and has since then been very active in the
political arena.

G-Ler's, especially those residing in the Gulf States, should prepare an
immediate statement directed to the Qatar Government/Kingdom, unveiling and
or protesting the appointment of "THE MOST DANGEROUS GAMBIAN ALIVE, BABA
'BONE-CRUSHER' JOBE" as Gambian representative to its nation. This demon must
be unmasked, sidelined, and charged for masterminding several atrocities
committed on Gambian civilians, during the AFPRC/APRC Regimes. Since Baba
Jobe poses the biggest to Yahya Jammeh's regime [another coup d' etat in the
pipeline], Jammeh feels more secure with him residing abroad. You guys would
remember trying the same ploy with Edward Singahteh for an Ambassadorial
Position, to which he, Edward, vehemently refused, as this would have been
his demise.

Defunct July 22nd members on military training?

Reliable reports reaching The Independent have indicated that the defunct
July 22nd members may have been engaged in some military training. Our
source, who revealed that he was present during last Roots Homecoming
Festival in Kanilai alleged that on the morning of Thursday 29th June, he saw
over 20 members of the banned movement including girls conducting military
exercises in the outskirts of Kanilai.

Some of the trainees he said were wearing green uniforms and others were in
black and white camouflage uniforms. He added that the previous Thursday, he
saw the people but that he thought they were also among the Festival
participants and it was only when he made an enquiry that he came to know
that there were even several other members of the defunct July 22nd in the
guard posts of President Jammeh's Kanilai residence.

'This is very serious and a national issue because they are now being
militarised and are likely to be taken on as presidential guards while at the
same time ready to terrorise citizens when elections approach,' he remarked.
He also claimed to have recognised their trainer who he said was among the
people allegedly sent by the government to Libya to train in the art of
terrorism. He said the training was being held on a piece of land in front of
a line house, some distance from the presidential palace.

He further alleged that seven brand new pickup vehicles were given to them as
means of transportation to and from their destinations. In corroboration of
the evidence of our source, a middle-aged man from that area said the claims
that the banned July 22nd ovement members were on training and that they were
also serving as security personnel could be true.

He said he witnessed once when one ruling APRC National Assembly member was
travelling and he saw some members of the July 22nd Movement escorting him
and forcing vehicles to leave the road for him. He further alleged that some
of the reported arrests and torture were indeed being carried out by the July
22nd members.

Meanwhile when contacted for his reaction to the story, Baba Jobe, who was
the chairman of the Movement only remarked that the banning of the Movement
did not stop the existence of the people. He then queried the source of the
information and went on to ask; 'how can you expect me to confirm something
to you without knowing the source?' before adding that unless the sources
were divulged to him, there will be no confirmation from him.

He then referred our reporter to The Gambia National Army. However the Army
Chief of Staff Colonel Baboucarr Jatta denied any knowledge of such training
going on. 'I am not aware of any such training for the banned movement,' he
said, adding that people might have seen them playing football and think that
they were on military training.

Meanwhile an insider at the GNA said it is true that there was some training
for the former movement members but he said that it was not being conducted
by the GNA. He asserted that it was also a concern to him when he came to
know about it but thatthere was nothing he could do about it. 'That kind of
training should be done by the military and not by civilians,' he added.
concerned'.

---------------------------------------------
Our nation Gambia is in for a rude awakening, as echoed by Hamjatta and kebba
on the resumption of military training of Gambian soldier's by the Queen of
England, just to keep the Gambia under her watchful eye. Gambians all over,
especially those abroad, must organize financially, morally, and
strategically, with opposition parties, to end this dilemma our nation is
undergoing.
The Movement is planning on a massive fundraising campaign, solely for the
Opposition Parties, even to the extend of sponsoring them on a tour of Europe
and USA. These Opposition Parties are at a serious financial disadvantage,
compared to APRC/Yahya Jammeh, who has a monopoly over the electoral
machinery.
Details on this issue coming forth to G-Ler's and other concerned Gambians
world wide. Any suggestions, contact us at the same email address.
