Jammeh Says Radio Gambia Is Next...
Daily Observer (Banjul)
July 26, 2000
By Saikou Marenah & Augustus Mendy

Banjul - The president, Yahya Jammeh, has said that the "cleansing exercise which is currently focused on the police force will be extended to Radio Gambia very soon."

He accused the radio people of misrepresenting his speeches in their news bulletins. President Jammeh said this, Sunday, during his meeting with the APRC youth wing as part of celebrations marking the sixth anniversary of the July 22 coup.

President Jammeh threatened that he will sack any civil servant suspected of being an opposition sympathiser. He declared that he staked his life to save The Gambia and warned that anyone "bent on disturbing the peace and stability of the nation will be buried six feet deep."

Youths

President Jammeh said his government spent heavily on youth development and urged young Gambians to take up trading and skilled jobs which tend to be left in the hands of foreigners. He advised them to rally behind his government and to help develop the country.

Electricity

President Jammeh spoke about the country's chronic power problem and promised that the next July 22 anniversary would not be worth celebrating if at least 98 per cent of the country has not been supplied with electricity.

SOS Touray, Soma Jobe

The SoS for Youth and Sports, Yankuba Touray, who is also the APRC national mobiliser, told the gathering that Gambians voted for President Jammeh during the last presidential elections for the development projects which he brought to the country. He urged the youth to cooperate and not entertain internal squabbles.

The assistant commissioner of Upper River Division, Momodou Soma Jobe, thanked President Jammeh for the recent donation of tractors to farmers and for mobilising youths under one umbrella. He defended his decision to sack eight civil servants in his division in the wake of the recent Basse incident, saying, "No government would allow its employers to sabotage its policies and programmes."

Banta Camara, the APRC deputy national chairman, called on youth to rally behind the president and his party for the betterment of The Gambia. He commended the youth and the soldiers for the active roles they are playing in maintaining peace and stability in The Gambia.

Other speakers at the State House gathering included the mayor of Banjul, Samba Faal, and youth mobilisers, Omar Sonko of URD, Omar Mambureh of CRD, and Tapha Saidy of NBD. The ceremony was chaired by Yaya Jarjussey, headchief of Jarra Central.
