Ams, thanks for this alert. Folks, this is the work of Yaya Jammeh and the
sycophants that would do anything to please him. I understand that the
assailants wore masks and opened fire with automatic weaponry and attempted
to torch the folks that work the press too. It is their resilience that
saved their lives and I hope their injuries are not life threatening.
Gambians have the power to do something about this criminal activity. Yes,
it is natural to be angry and sympathize with the proprietors of the
Independent Newspaper but more is expected from each of us. In addition to
the letter writing campaign, we need to be defiant and make sure the paper
and others like it are still in circulation. I understand that the press
cost some where around $40,000 and it is burnt to the ground. What can we
do to help the Independent Newspaper? I think the first thing we need to do
is to make sure the paper continues to circulate, but it costs money to do
that and that is where we come in. In order to continue its publications,
The Independent Newspaper has to use other printing presses for a fee. At
this time I do not have the figures in question, but will provide them as
they become readily available. I am suggesting we contribute to the media
fund that has already been started to help the private media. We can
nominate trustees for the fund and set the ball in motion for the task
ahead. Attached, is the status of the media fund. Alternative suggestions
are welcomed. Together, we can achieve aucommon results.
