UGANDA 6/4/2004 17:18 ACCIDENT IN SUDAN, UGANDAN SOLDIERS KILLED General, Brief At least 17 Ugandan soldiers were killed and 30 injured two days ago in an accident in Sudan, where the Kampala armed forces are carrying out operations against the rebels of LRA (lord's Resistance Army), which have their bases across the border. The news comes from MISNA sources, who report that the ten worst injured soldiers were transported to Saint Mary Hospital of Lachor, near Gulu, the main city in northern Uganda. It seems that a grenade accidentally exploded in a military truck on which the soldiers were travelling, subsequently triggering other explosions. Numerous people are currently receiving treatment in the hospital of Lachor, one of the main health centres in the area. "The patients are civilians, government soldiers and LRA rebels, who are all united by their suffering," says a MISNA source. The rebels of LRA have tormented the civilian population of north Uganda for over 17 years; so far, attempts by the government army to defeat the rebellion have been in vain. It is estimated that the militia had abducted over 20,000 boys and girls, while over one million people have been displaced from their homes and land and are now living in terrible conditions in huge refugee camps set up by the authorities.
