If an intellectual means somebody with a Ph.D. or a string of university
degrees then believe me Mr. Ceesay will end up coming up with a rather thick
volume.  However, I'm uneasy with the limitative nature of the proposed
directory.

The best directory that Gambian intellectuals can establish is through their
works in art, literature, science, technology, etc. Some years ago, I took
part in an assignment where every participant was asked to write down the
names of all writers in their respective countries.  Of course, the first
name that came to my mind was Lenrie Peters, oh yes and William Conton (if
he could be considered as such). Then I got stuck.  It happened that at the
same time Ebou Dibba had published "Chaff in the Wind". So my list got a
little longer by a name. In the end, I submitted a list that made me look
like either I didn't know what I was doing or there were just not enough
writers in my country.

Anything therefore that will bring to light the contribution of Gambians in
the different aspects of social, economic and scientific development without
regard to their educational background would be most helpful.  I however
think that a directory that will circumscribe Gambians into 'progressive
intellectuals' will not do justice to the efforts of countless other
Gambians who have been trying to usher, in one way or another, our society
into the realm of developed nations.
