                  By: Staff Writer
The police top brass in Banjul were greeted with rude shock on Monday, when the Force’s Deputy Inspector General of police Abou Njie, tendered his resignation letter. Deputy IGP Njie, has resigned with immediate effect, the Freedom Newspaper was informed. The police chief is yet to receive an acknowledgement from The Gambian authorities on his sudden stepping down from the force which is faced by leadership struggle and unfinished internal bickering.

Sources say Mr.Njie’s resignation was as a result of an alleged acrimonious relationship between him and IGP Ousman Sonko, whose competence is being questioned within the rank and file of the force. Sonko according to sources lacked knowledge about basic police duties and never wanted to listen or buy the ideas of the old guards within the force. He used to work with the military and for some reasons the President decided to deploy him to the police force, a field his critics say was completely new to him.
DIG Njie used to head the serious crime unit of the Force prior to his promotion as deputy IGP. Njie also served the defunct National Security Services, the (NSS) under the First Republic.
