Momodou B.,

If you could remember this issue was raised here many times and some of us
were accused of distorting the situation because of our stance against the
AFPRC government, a human rights lawyer ,who dared to speak was never taking
seriously, now we are told a different story. You see the SOS for interior was
of another opinion then than what he is now trying to explain, you sense the
outright arrogance in the manner he was addressing the situation. Now that the
Said failed coup is here and some explanations have to be done. The harassing
of people at Denton Bridge was just some months back,if these people said that
they have been following the activities of the coup plotters for months and
still yet defend the ruthless act of these people against ordinary people
during the same period, then the logic behind such explanation becomes
complicated.Would they apologise if there were no coup plotters ? or do they
need people who threaten their power before they are able to see the suffering
of the people ?If this is the case, our country is very small for such an
adventure.

Hi!

The following is from The Point online.

Army Chief Of Staff Apologises To Denton Bridge Victims

he Army Chief of Staff Colonel Baboucarr Jatta has apologised to Gambians
about the harassment they have encountered from soldiers of the Gambia
National Army at the Denton bridge.

Colonel Jatta made this apology during a press conference at the
Department of State for the Interior:"We have our own reasons for being at
denton bridge in the first place and whatever happened at denton bridge, we
assume that there is some little bit of misunderstanding. we started working
on it gradually .For things of that nature we have to see how best things can
be worked out to suit not only the interest of the public but also the
security. Towards the end, I believe the problem has been taken care of, not
so?

" What ever transpired at denton bridge, we extend our apology and I hope the
public will accept our apology. at this moment that is my response to the
question".

He continued, "whatever transpired we extend our apology and I hope that
the general public will accept this".

In the same gathering the Secretary of State for the Interior, Ousman Badgie
also took the opportunity to explain about the security arrangements at the
bridge.

'In the security we have two types of duties, the ordinary and extraordinary
duties. In the ordinary duties, the small cadre take the opportunity to do
things on their own initiative while in the extraordinary duties the high
command gives the order directly' he explained.

He also said: "I didn't defend the move, what I refuted the allegation of the
lawyer saying there is no law empowering the security force to ask people to
exhibit their ID cards whenever the need arises. What I said is there is a
law, Section 19 of The Gambia Nationality and Citizenship act. And I went
further that as law enforcement agents, we are not supposed to be arrogant,
we have to be very tactful and conduct our duties with all the respect due and
I presented our apology ", adding in the direction of the colleague who asked
him to explain his statement on TV in support of the move, "was that not
done? Be fair to me my sister".
