ABIDJAN, Sept 21 (AFP) - A failed coup bid in the Ivory Coast this week
left 270 people dead and 300 injured in Abidjan, an Ivorian military source
said late Friday.
   Earlier in the day. undertakers picked corpses off the streets of the
Ivorian economic capital.
   In the northern town of Korhogo, the local Red Cross said that one
person had been killed and three injured, including a colonel.
   "The fighting and the operations in the country's financial centre over
the last 48 hours have left 270 dead and 300 injured, including attackers
and military," the source said, adding that it was difficult to distinguish
the bodies of loyal soldiers from mutineers.
   An earlier toll from Thursday's fighting put the number of dead at 80
with 150 injured.
   In a televised address President Laurent Gbagbo confirmed the death of
interior minister Emile Boga Doudou.
   Ivory Coast's former military ruler General Robert Guei, accused of
being behind the failed coup, was also killed, in obscure circumstances,
with his supporters saying he had nothing to do with the putsch.
   Government television on Friday launched an appeal for blood donations.
