Woman beats up Saudi religious cop
May 17, 2010 at 08:53

Officer hospitalised after woman, in her 20s, 'unleashed fierce
attack' when confronted while with man -paper.

DUBAI - A woman has allegedly assaulted a member of Saudi Arabia’s
religious police after the officer confronted her while she was at an
amusement park with a man, the Saudi Gazette reported on Monday.

The officer of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and
Prevention of Vice (Haia) had to be taken to hospital for treatment
for bruises to his face and body, the daily newspaper said.

The Saudi Gazette said when the officer approached the couple to
confirm their identities and relationship the woman, in her 20s,
allegedly “unleashed a fierce attack ... with her fists”.

Conversely, the man she was with “collapsed” when questioned by the
officer, according to the newspaper.

The Haia said they are looking into the incident, which took place in
the Al-Ahsa governorate, the largest in Saudi Arabia's Eastern
Province.

The Haia are tasked with enforcing Saudi Arabia’s strict Islamic laws,
which are based on the ultra-conservative Wahhabi version of Islam.

Under Saudi law, women are not allowed to go out without guardians,
unrelated men and women cannot mix, and women are not permitted to
drive.
