SAINEY MBYE IS ALIVE Written by Alieu Badara Ceesay Monday, 03 October 2005 Sainey Mbye, the newly-elected National Assembly member for Upper Saloum in the September 29 by-elections, is alive and well, contrary to widespread rumours that he died last Friday of a snake bite.
Rumour of Sainey Mbye’s purported death filtered around the country in the early hours of Saturday, but by nightfall the whole country was already awash with the hearsay.

The Daily Observer tried for three solid hours to contact Mr Mbye, but telephone lines in the area were down. But top officials of the APRC told this paper that they had already got in touch with Mr Mbye and he is alive and kicking. They described the rumour as “a very strange joke.”

Later in the night, the family of the newly elected NAM issued a press release broadcast on GRTS television, dismissing the rumour as unfounded. “He is alive and well and has started touring Upper Saloum following his victory to thank the electorate for voting him into office,’’ the release stated.

While it was not clear what could have sparked off the rumour, The Daily Observer confirmed the death in Bakau of one Sainey Mbengue but who was widely called Sainey Mbye. “It may be that this must have caused the rumour,’’ said one Bakau resident yesterday .

Mr Mbye, along with the elected Nadd Nams, is expected to be sworn in today. He polled 2946 against his opponent, Hamat Bah who garnered 2454 votes.
