Concern about knife attack on journalist in Banjul

Reporters Without Borders is very concerned about a knife attack on  
journalist Momodou Justice Darboe of the independent daily The Point  
at he was returning home at about 11 p.m. on 1 July in Banjul.

“Even if there is so far no evidence that the attack was linked to  
Darboe’s work as a journalist, an investigation must be carried out  
to establish the circumstances and motive,” the press freedom  
organisation said.

Darboe was treated at the Fajikunda health centre for the stab wounds  
inflicted by his assailant, who took nothing from him. After the  
attack, he learned from neighbours that persons who refused to  
identify themselves had been asking questions about him.

Reporters sans frontières inquiète après l’attaque au couteau d’un  
journaliste

Reporters sans frontières exprime son inquiétude suite à l’agression  
dont a été vicitime Momodou Justice Darboe, du quotidien indépendant  
The Point, dans la soirée du 1er juillet 2008 à Banjul.

"Même si rien ne permet de dire que l’attaque dont a été victime  
Momodou Justice Darboe est liée à son activité professionnelle, une  
enquête doit être ouverte pour que le contexte et les raisons de  
cette agression soient éclaircis", a déclaré Reporters sans frontières.

Le 1er juillet 2008, vers 23 heures, Momodou Justice Darboe a été  
attaqué par un inconnu armé d’un couteau alors qu’il rentrait chez  
lui. Le journaliste a été soigné de ses blessures au centre de santé  
de Fajikunda. L’agresseur ne lui a rien volé. Suite à cette attaque,  
le journaliste a appris des habitants de son quartier que plusieurs  
personnes refusant de dévoiler leur identité avaient cherché à  
obtenir des informations sur lui.
