Coalition in itself is not a strategy. It is a process that may help
deliver an ultimate goal. It is a means and not an end in itself. It
is also quite unrealistic to hope that a mere coalition of the
willing with desperate political agendas can evolve into a catalyst
of change. The chances of that happening are highly unlikely, and
even if successful it may unnoticeably transmogrify into a nasty
power struggle. The Senegalese Sopi is a good case in point.
An effective coalition should begin with a fundamental common
denominator that is an inherent interest to all parties involved…i.e.
liberty, a gift from God to mankind; and not some short-sighted
ambitions of winning general elections. The history of general
elections in Africa is a concatenation of one form of state
repression replaced by another. An enterprise for justice needs a
reservoir of moral capital from all Gambians dedicated to the
struggle, and not the promotion of some parochial party agenda.
Recently Lawyer Darboe has taken the lead with a display of mature
statesmanship by calling for dialogue with the government. I support
his call wholeheartedly, and wish him success. I have mentioned this
before on G-L…that Yaya Jammeh needs motivation to do good, and not
the constant reproach of his weaknesses (Lord knows he has lots of
them, and so do we all). Let us do the humanly thing of saving a
lost soul in the name of God / Allah, and leave the task of judgment
to divine grace.
Lawyer Darboe is a fine, capable gentleman, so is Mr. Bah, Mr. Juwara
and Mr. Saul M’benga whom I happen meet in DC years ago. However, a
coalition for justice needs a leadership of solid moral authority
beyond reproach…. a someone like Halifa Sallah that renounces
mediocre politics, abandons the bogus socialism and champions a moral
cause of fighting injustice. Halifa Sallah is capable of doing what
Martin L. King Jnr. had done in history. It only takes moral
courage, sincerity to the truth, charity in demanding justice for all
including the APRC, and a faith in God’s promise that the good shall
overcome no matter what.
