ZIGUINCHOR, Senegal, Nov 15 (AFP) - Suspected rebels on
Thursday robbed two vehicles travelling in Senegal's Casamance
region and took six people hostage in the latest road attack in the
southern province.
A minibus and a truck transporting bread were looted by
Movement of Democratic Forces for Casamance (MFDC) rebels in
the town of Niaguis, about 15 kilometres (10 miles) from
Ziguinchor, the provincial capital, a security official said.
After the attack, the armed group of 20 men took six people
hostage to help them carry the stolen goods.
The army has begun searching for the rebels, and explosions
were heard in the area from the capital.
Highway robbery and attacks have surged in Casamance in
recent weeks at a time when the MFDC, which has waged a
separatist struggle for two decades, is going through a bitter
leadership power struggle.
In October, separatist leaders warned the group was out of cash
and claimed that a resurgence in violence in Casamance was
driven by hunger among MFDC fighters.
