PARTNERSAGAINSTPAIN is live with an update that includes discussions of
chronic pain and its etiology, the use of opioids to help treat chronic pain,
a detailed set of algorithms to help develop and implement JCAHO-consistent
pain management plans and a new section devoted to articles on the cost of
pain.  Here are a few highlights as an introduction.

Chronic pain:  A new disease?
Nearly one-third of the American population experiences chronic pain at some
point in life.  This figure, disturbing on its own, becomes more problematic
in light of recent studies which demonstrate that chronic pain is a
destructive disease process that creates pathologic changes in the central
and peripheral nervous systems.

Chronic pain:  The case for opioids
Article addresses the significant issues surrounding treatment for chronic
pain in general and specifically the use of opioids. The author believes that
opioid medications allow us to treat chronic pain as aggressively as we would
any pathogen, but that barriers against their use are only slowly being
dismantled.

Pain management:  Tools for implementing the new JCAHO standards
Seven-part printed “tool kit” includes the standards, key economic measures
and key process steps to help hospitals prepare for new the Joint Commission
pain standards.  Includes details of the new JCAHO requirements for
organizations; ways to document and demonstrate compliance for JCAHO
surveyors; 8-step algorithm for “institutionalizing a commitment” to pain
management, and more.

Pain after surgery feared and undertreated
Patients preparing for surgery express greater concern over pain than over
the prospect of a full recovery.  Nearly 60% list pain as their greatest
pre-surgery worry — above the desire even “to get better.”

Pain and suffering in seriously ill hospitalized patients
Using studies that assess factors related to the frequency and severity of
pain in seriously ill and older hospitalized patients, researchers found that
although there was wide variation among the five teaching hospitals studied,
this patient group experienced frequent and severe pain during
hospitalization.

Families’ perception of added value of hospice in nursing home
A compelling study provides the first evidence that “nursing home hospice” —
skilled pain management and other palliative care services provided by
hospice agencies on a contract basis — enhances quality of care for the dying
in the nursing home setting.
