A draft bill entitled "an Act to amend the Indemnity Act and for matters
connected therewith" signed by the Secretary of State for the Interior and
Religious Affairs Ousman Badjie has been gazetted for presentation to the
National Assembly for enactment. According to the gazette, "This Act may be
cited as the Indemnity (Amendment) Act 2001 and shall be deemed to have come
into force on 1st January, 2000".

The bill aims to amend the Indemnity Act 8 of 1982, which was enacted "to
indemnity the government or any agent of government or any person in the
service of the government or any authority acting on behalf of government
for any matter or omission to act or things done or pin pointed to have been
done during the period of public emergency." According to the gazette, "The
amendment bill seeks to promote national reconciliation and foster a
conducive environment for peace and continued stability and development in
The Gambia".
