DAKAR, Aug 28 (AFP) - Gambia's foreign minister, Sedate Jobe, on
Tuesday confirmed reports that he had resigned and that President
Yahya Jammeh had accepted his resignation.
In a telephone interview with AFP here, Jobe refused to be drawn
into the reasons behind his departure.
"I have resigned. My resignation has been accepted. I have no
further comment to make," he said.
Jobe's resignation was announced on national television on
Monday evening.
His departure comes less than one week after the expulsion by
Gambia of a British diplomat.
Bharat Joshi, the deputy head of mission at the British High
Commission in Banjul, the Gambian capital, left the country last
Wednesday after being declared 'persona non grata' by officials
there.
He was expelled after Fatumata Jahumpa Cessay, a Gambian
government official, criticised him for attending an opposition
coalition meeting on August 20.
Prominent opposition politician Ousainu Darboe called for Jobe
to resign following the expulsion.
The British Foreign Office told AFP last week that the meeting
which Joshi attended was a press conference, open to everyone, and
that he had "absolutely not" attended a meeting of the opposition.
