Subject: [unioNews] Zimbabwe detains US plane carrying suspected mercenaries

Zimbabwe detains US plane carrying suspected mercenaries

Harare, Zimbabwe (PANA) - Security forces in Zimbabwe
said Monday they had detained a US-registered plane
carrying some 64 suspected mercenaries and weapons.

Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi, who is in charge of
Zimbabwean police, said the 727-200 Boeing aircraft was
detained Sunday after the crew had made a false declaration
of its cargo at the Harare International Airport.

He said the plane, whose destination was unknown was
detained after aviation officials discovered the crew
had made a false declaration to customs.

Mohadi said 64 armed men of various nationalities were
found on board, as well as an assortment of arms.

"Investigations to establish the true identities of the
men and their ultimate mission are underway," the Minister
said.

This is the second time foreign armed men would be arrested
at the Harare International Airport within five years.

Three heavily armed Americans were arrested in 1999 at the
airport while trying to board an aircraft to Europe.

The Americans, who claimed they were transiting from DR Congo,
were later jailed for eight months each for flouting Zimbabwe's
aviation laws.
