TENSIONS MOUNTING AT THE GAMBIAN ARMY-AS AGGRIEVED SOLDIERS LAMENT ABOUT UNPAID ALLOWANCES!!!!!

           Tensions are mounting in The Gambian military, as some soldiers who served as peacekeepers in the troubled region of Sudan are complaining about their unpaid allowances. The soldiers who wished to remain anonymous told The Freedom Newspaper that since their return from Sudan, "the Jammeh government did not pay them their allowances", which they say is  amounting  to thousands  of Gambian dalasis.
   
          The aggrieved soldiers were said to have notified the concerned Gambian authorities about the delay in settling their "hard earned monies." The said Gambian contingent was led by Army officer  Peter Singhateh. The soldiers said they cannot understand why the government is reluctant to fulfil its financial obligation to  what they called "the sons of this country who put their lives to restore peace in Sudan."
   
            It would be recalled that The Gambian contingent were part of the United Nations peacekeepers sent to Sudan alongside with other West African troops. The aggrieved soldiers told this paper that the UN spent a lot of money in maintaining the said troops and therefore wondered why the government of the day was not keen at paying them their allowances.
   
                  Some of the unpaid soldiers told this news medium that they have families to take care of and the unexplained delay on the side of the government to settle their allowances is causing unnecessary hardship to their loved ones. "Some of the soldiers are currently indebted and are finding it difficult to feed their families. This is the situation."said our sources.
   
  A well placed military source told The Freedom Newspaper that the soldiers were  disgruntled over the non payment of their  allowances. "Some meetings were conducted to discuss ways and means to bring sanity into the army."said our source.
   
  Despite previous media reports on the non payment of the soldiers allowances, the Army Command Head Quarters in Banjul, had not publicly commented on the issue. Insiders at the GAF offices say the issue was being down played by the command for security reasons.
