Digital age pulls plug on BBC shortwave

This WAS London: With worldwide access to its programs available online and
via satellite radio, the BBC World Service is pulling the plug on its North
American and Australian shortwave radio broadcasts.

LONDON (AP) — Long before CNN and the Internet were born, the British
Broadcasting Corp.'s World Service radio was a global information force,
beaming trusted dispatches past the censors of oppressive regimes,
providing in-depth stories to those who craved word of events beyond their
own borders. From Tuscany to Tibet to Texas, huddling around a shortwave
radio to listen to the BBC is for millions a tradition that dates back to
the days when the sun never set on the British Empire.
