TAIPEI, July 4 (AFP) - Taiwan has reached an agreement with
Senegal to help the African state build a university which the
foreign ministry said Wednesday would be a new way of bilateral
cooperation.
"During the stay here of Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade,
the governments of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Senegal have
forged an agreement on the establishment of an university," the
ministrty said in a statement.
Wade wrapped up his state visit Wedneday after he flew into
Taiwan Saturday.
The ministry said the university will have five colleges and an
information center to be equipped with computer and video
conferencing systems, but the ministry did not say when the
five-year building program will start.
"The purpose of the university is to provide an environment for
advanced studies for Senegal and the neighbouring countries," it
said.
While saying the program would help facilitate cultural and
academic exchanges between the two states, it would "also emerge as
a new model of cooperation with African countries."
Taiwan has heightened its vigilance against China in the wake of
Beijing's diplomatic triumph to persuade Macedonia to switch
recogition from Taipei last month.
Taipei and Beijing have long been engaged in a diplomatic
tug-of-war and often try to woo allies away from each other with
economic and financial aid.
Senegal is among the 28 countries to recognise Taiwan, which
Beijing regards as part of its territory awaiting reunification.
