Hello Jennifer:
Unfortunately, the states that have enforced this law (Sharia) are doing it
on their own. The Nigerian govt. and Mr. Obasanjo would rather not have
states enforce their own judicial system. But, sadly, the dynamics of things
in Nigeria are a bit different. Obasanjo is in a very precarious situation
because the Northerners are likely to start some type of civil war or ethnic
bloodletting if this law is officially banished. A sad state of affairs
indeed.

Furthermore, it is important to note that Sharia was formulated by Islamic
scholars (Bukharin I think) who wrote the laws based on their interpretation
of the Quran. So I think it is OK for a Muslim to criticize this law since
it was not started from the divine word of Allah.

I, myself, believe that this law has no place in Africa. It is not
compatible with our traditional beliefs and practices.
