Greetings all,
I realize that the polygamy discussion, which was very interesting and
educational, has about run its course, but I just wanted to share the
reply I got from a demographer at the statistics office in Gambia. best
always, Ylva

Ylva,

I hope you have not given up on my response to your question of polygamy.
I have been too busy these days and could not find time to access
internet. From the results of the 1993 Population and Housing Census,
50.2 percent of currently married women in The Gambia are in polygamous
marriages. In an eastern part of the the percentage is as high as 60
percent but along the coastal areas it is only a little over 30 per cent.
You can see that it is extremely high i this country. Although with
increased educational attainment the incidence of polygamy is on the
decline there continues to be high prevalence in The Gambia.

Please let me know if you need more information on polygamy in the
Gambia. I am a demographer working with the central statistics department
in The Gambia. If you need additional information do not hesitate to ask
for it.

Thank you.

Alieu Sarr
