Well Yoro. It is what it is in Gambia today. It is a pity that it has
to take a veteran U.S journalist for the Point Newspaper to publish
what otherwise would have been said by Gambian journalists had they
the freedom and the right to do so. Those who tried it ended up dead
or in jail. It is very telling that an American journalist can come to
Gambia and say these things and leave in one piece. if these were
words from a Gambian or African journalist, he would not see the exit
to the lecture hall without being escorted by the "boys."
The fact is, Yaya was not in the audience and would not have been in
the audience if this lecture was delivered by a Gambian Journalist,
however, before the end of the lecture, he would have had word of what
is said and who said it. Well, in the case of a veteran U.S
journalist, no one will bother to pass the word because they know they
are dealing with an "American" who can say or do whatever is normally
legal in the laws of Gambia and leave to enjoy a cold Julbrew at the
Sheraton. Bearing in mind that he has not said anything illegal or
contrary to the laws of Gambia, albeit the bitter truth in the eyes
and ears of authority.
So, the question we all need to ask is why would a Gambian or African
journalist end up dead or in jail if they said the same plain
truth?......This is today's Gambia.
I applaud the U. S Embassy for making available the outlet to let
truth be known where it is impossible for the citizens to say what
they want to say and how they want to say it.
