Jane,

I agree with you in totality. Loneliness and isolation by family or friends (society) is one of the contributing factors to such societal lapses. It becomes a shame that billions of dollars can be funded in areas of unjustified wars while the societies’ demands are being intentionally ignored. It is even more shameful of a society that is un-forgetful and unforgiving. If you see the beggars in the horrible winter storms or sleeping underneath the bridges, then that’s when one will even understand your thread better.

In fact, precisely to say, you analyzed the situation well. From the first incident leading to this thread in the memos left by the killer, it become obvious of his mental disturbance resulting from his life encounters, thus leading to his “hopelessness.”

Essentially, it is as well a sympathy extended to the killer for his blackout from decency, something that might not be his fault. So far, we arrived at two points:

-Lack of effective gun control measures

-Societal isolation leading to hopelessness

Jane, thank you for your mild rejoinder.

Regards,

Yero.

Gun control is not the only issue and without meaningful family and community connections, people become lost and life has little meaning, and i think modern society is begining to see what is just the tip of the iceberg. > > Rgds,> Jabou Joh> > -----Original Message-----> From: Jane Warner <[log in to unmask]>> To: [log in to unmask]> Sent: Tue, 11 Dec 2007 12:52 pm> Subject: Re: The Nebraska Mall shooting by a teenager/thanks> > > I would like to add that guns are not the only factor (I support gun control emphatically). I believe that in each of these cases, if you scratch the surface, you will find the shooter's history of abuse, neglect, abandonment. This is because, in this society of purported "family values", there is precious little support from society and its institutions for communities or families. Everything requires nurture to thrive and grow--without things turn toxic . When families and individuals come to be in trouble, there is little for them other than "going it alone". I don't say this to forgive killers for their rampages and murders, but I think these events are less "senseless" than they are usually billed. I suggest looking at our mental health system, at our "blame the victim" approach, at our fetish for individual responsibility rather than communal interdependence. Or look at the our government's response to Hurricane Katrina and the effects on New Orleans... > > Just a thought or two. > > *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* > > Jane Zainab Warner-Dukuray > University of Washington > Seattle, Washington > > *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* > > On Mon, 10 Dec 2007, Y Jallow wrote: > > > > > > > "The unfortunate and sad fact is that the weapons manufacturers who are behind the gun lobby are the reason for the failure to get any meaningful gun control laws passed. Your ink didnÿÿt even dry yet. Here is another sad one of the many I am closely observing. I am sure you are following the spree. CNN is the outlet for all of the scary ones.
