Dear Gassama Family of Perang Sanchaba:

Please accept my deepest condolence on the death of your father, Alhagie TaSankung Gassama, the grand marabout of Perang Sanchaba.  Alhagie TaSankung, as we commonly called him, was a man of wisdom.  His sudden death on Tuesday, November 30, 2004 was regrettable.  Allah, please forgive me.     

When the APRC agents in my native Kombo East asked him to pray for evil deeds to befall me, he politely refused.  He even sent message to my uncles' compounds telling them of the incident.      

I never had to introduce myself to his late brother, Kang Lamin Gassama of Perang Berending whether he was in seclusion or not.  I used to stand my the closed door and called out his name with greetings.    He would always call out my name.  

History as it served me correctly revealed that my late Imam grandfather of Perang Berending attended the same school with the late Kang Lamin Gassama.

Way back some thirty years ago, your father sent a message to my late grandfather when a villager committed suide on a tree.  I vividly remembered when the police came.  The deceased lived less than 200 yards from his compound.  Those were the days when there was a civil and united Gambia.     

How we take things for granted! Do we remember those sermons said to us when we were kids?  How about Alhagie TaSankung's frequent trips to Faraba Banta Primary School?  He would give each student money.  I know Abdou, Moro, Naba, Jakomba, and Tida vividly remember those days.   

Time indeed flies. I was deeply touched when he encouraged me to run for office.  I wished time had prevailed for him to hear me repeat an acknowledgment and willingness for a second time around.    

I wished I had the opportunity to just say good bye. But I will meet him some day.  May his soul rest in perfect peace.
