OK, I can understand a boycott, if we are talking about the fact that
Youssou Ndour made such a public stance on the Iraq war, yet
seemingly, and I say seemingly, as I can't say for sure, ignored
issues going on in his own backyard, such as the slaying/intimidation
of journalists, and other human rights/other violations going on and
committed by the government of Yahya Jammeh.


However, if I'm understanding Pasamba correctly, he is asking us to
boycott a CD purely based on the title, "Alsamaday".  Now, as I'm not
a master of *any* of the Senegambian languages, if I decided to
boycott the new Youssou Ndour CD purely based on Pasamba's suggestion,
I'd be putting a lot of faith and stock in what he is saying, and I'm
just not the type of person to do that!


Firstly, you assert that "Alsamaday" was the APRC/AFPRC slogan for the
recently concluded elections.  OK, fine, however, what does
"alsamaday" mean?  You did not go on to elucidate how the
phrase/expression is/was an overtly APRC campaign slogan.  I mean, if
"Alsamaday" means something inocuous like "let's go to the store",
then I find it hard to see how this would be related to the APRC,
unless the CD itself contains songs overtly praising Yahya Jammeh and
his government.  If this was the case, then you'd have a reason to ask
us to boycott the new CD.


However, you're asking us to boycott a CD, from what I can understand,
purely based on the title of the CD, when I can't even say for sure
that the name of the title would be anything outwardly supporting
Yahya Jammeh.  All you say is that we should boycott a CD just because
of the title, because the title happens to coincidentally be the same
slogan/expression as an election slogan used by the APRC.


And if I'm going to make a decision to boycott anyone's music, you
gotta do better than "the title is the same slogan as an APRC slogan".


Now, this to me takes nothing away from the fact that Youssou Ndour
seemingly had no qualms about coming to The Gambia shortly after Deyda
Hydara was shot, and seemingly didn't care that many could be mourning
for Deyda, and at the same time he wants to sing/talk about human
rights/democracy/whatever.  If you want to boycott his music based on
those grounds, than that seems to be more of a solid position.
However, I won't boycott anyone purely based on the title of a CD,
unless that title is offensive, etc.


Especially since I don't even know what "Alsamaday" means.  So if I
just "blindly" follow you and boycott Youssou's CD, then I'm not
making an informed decision, and I don't think it's fair for you to
call for us to boycott something, when you don't clearly explain why.
You just throw out there the assertion that "he uses a slogan directly
from the APRC", and then throw in something about Nike and Wal-Mart to
bolster your point (which to me it doesn't, because you can clearly
point to Nike / Wal-Mart's business practices, etc.)




So tell me what "Alsamaday" means, tell me how this is, or is not
related, to the APRC, and then give me some tangible reasons to
boycott him!  Not just some word/phrase that possibly *anyone* could
use!  So now, if we use the word "Alsamaday", it means we support
Jammeh?  Because that is the impression you give out!


And I'm sure that the RIAA would love the fact that you are telling
people to buy illegal copies of someone's music (as if two wrongs make
things right and/or the ends justify the means).
