Sir Dawda Jawara, former president of The Gambia has formally resigned as
leader and secretary general of the People's Progressive Party after
retiring from active party politics.

In a letter dated August 29, 2002 addressed to the PPP's national president,
Alhaji Yaya Ceesay, Sir Dawda said "In various public statements I made
following the 2001 Presidential Election, I announced my decision for
personal reasons to retire from active politics. In the light of that
decision the party may now wish to elect a Secretary General and in order to
facilitate that essential process in the evolution of the party I hereby
tender my resignation.

I wish my successor and the party in general every success in the service of
the nation." A press conference was called yesterday by the Central
Committee of the People's Progressive Party yesterday to brief the press
about Sir Dawda's resignation and retirement from the PPP and active party
politics in The Gambia. For more on the press briefing see our next issue.
