BISSAU, June 11 (AFP) - Guinea-Bissau President Kumba Yala Tuesday
announced an amnesty for 169 people suspected of involvement in an
attempted coup in December, but said another plot to overthow him was
foiled last month.
   Six people have been arrested since the May attempt, the president said
during a meeting with diplomats, senior officers and government officials.
   At Tuesday's meeting, Yala presented a dozen of the 169 suspects who
were granted amnesty, 47 of whom are still in prison, saying they had been
freed "in the name of national reconciliation."
   Among them were eight men identified as members of the Casamance
Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC), which has been fighting for almost
20 years for independence for the southern Casamance region of Senegal,
which borders
Guinea-Bissau.
   "The United Nations will remove from the country the Senegalese from
Casamance, as they have no place here," the president said.
   The amnesty announcement comes during the trial in Bissau of those
suspected of taking part in a November 2000 coup attempt led rebel General
Ansumane Mane, who was killed by forces loyal to to Yala.
   In 1998-1999, an 11-month military rebellion led by General Mane led to the
ouster of president Joao Bernardo Vieira. A military junta followed until
elections were held in January 2000, won by Yala.
