I first met sukuro in the most unusual of all places. He was not a typical
guy as was always visible by the many friends packed in his Kafuta room. He
dominated the sessions with stories about the kombos, most specifically
Banjul. Everyone loves those sessions. I was particularly intrigued by his
Mandinka language. He speaks it well though and it was fun listening him
speak it. He would hardly make two complete sentences in a row without
completing or making the third one in wolof. And the people, mainly
Mandinkas and fulas loved it. He was just too nice a human being. I wonder
if Sukuro has an enemy at all. I love the endless stories about Banjul, the
fun, the laughs, the omelette meals, and of cause, the “attaya.”

What I found completely astounding about him was why of all places did he
chose to settle in Kafuta, undoubtedly the biggest town in the district of
Kombo East. Am not sure if he answered that but it was abundantly clear that
he did not settle there to evade prosecution or anything sinister for that
matter. Kafuta had no electricity, running tap water and other essentials
found in Banjul. Nonetheless, Sukuro loved it out there and so do i. He was
a very well known in the town and very respected. But he was more well known
in government circle and among senior officials. On one occasion, while in
kafuta, Captain Yankuba Touray, then minister of in charge of AFPRC
re-construction programme visited a worksite in Kafuta, and could not
believe his eyes when he sited Sukuro in the crowd. He rushed to embrace
Sukuro as the crowd looked in amazement. Everyone knows Sukuro in Kafuta,
but no one knew that he commanded such an aura for Captain Touray to rush to
hug him. Touray toured the project hand in hand with Sukuro as his deputy
and other members of his delegation followed behind them.

Sukuro never boasted about anything. He was the same humble Sukuro the next
day. Funny as ever, a hard worker who headed Steel fixing section and was in
charge of many working under him. This is the man we have lost! May God
Bless his soul.
