Culled from the Observer

Jawara to return in mid-April

Competent sources close to the family of ex-president, Sir Dawda Jawara,
have told the Daily Observer that the former president of The Gambia and his
family are expected “here in mid-April 2002”. According to the sources, all
necessary arrangements had been put in place by the family to facilitate
Jawara’s return. Sources further said the preparations included the
renovation of his Fajara residence and addressing the issue of his security,
among others.
Sources also indicated that following the visit of his sons to The Gambia on
a fact-finding mission last January, Jawara and his family were impressed
with the report from his sons about the country they had left for so long,
thus prompting him to work on the necessary arrangements for a final return
after eight years in exile in the United Kingdom.
It could be recalled that Sir Dawda Jawara was granted an unconditional
amnesty by President Yahya Jammeh during his inauguration speech last
December following his victory at the October 18 presidential poll. Sir
Dawda, however welcomed Jammeh’s amnesty but emphasised the need to widen
the invitation to include other Gambians who are in exile. Meanwhile, the
sources could not give a precise date for Sir Dawda’s pending return.
