United opposition to contest Jarra West
By Yusuf Ceesay
Jun 3, 2004, 11:31

As the political field braces itself up for next month’s by-election in Jarra West, the Daily Observer has been reliably informed that the opposition parties are currently working on a coalition to contest the by-election.

Revealing this to our reporter yesterday, Omar Jallow, alias OJ, of the People’s Progressive Party, PPP, said all the existing political parties, namely, UDP, NDAM, NRP and PDOIS are currently engaged in serious talks on the possibility of forming a coalition to, as he put it, unseat the APRC regime. OJ further disclosed that the leadership of such a coalition has not yet been decided. "That would be known as soon as everything is in place,’’ he said.

The former Agriculture minster could not also tell who would be the choice of the coalition to contest the seat. "All those things will be ironed out in due course,’’ he said. Meanwhile speculations are rife that the coalition, if ever it happens, might put up veteran politician and former holder of the seat, Kemeseng Jammeh, of the UDP.

The Jarra West parliamentary seat became vacant after the holder Baba Jobe was jailed on March 29 this year. According to the constitution a by-election should be held within 90 days of the declaration of a vacancy on a parliamentary seat. The IEC has indicated it would conduct a by-election in the constituency in July.
