KANTORA IN AGONY
Armed robbers kill man, 80

Early on Thursday morning, armed robbers attacked the home of Alhaji Bangali Touray, believed to be in his
eighties, killed him and went away with an undisclosed sum of money and other valuable items.

Mr Touray was a successful businessman in the village of Jida, Kantora district, Upper River Division. Some of
the villagers claimed that the attackers were armed with AK 47 rifles and that they fired shots during the
attack deterring the people in Mr Touray's home and neighbours from coming out to his aid.

The attack was said to have lasted for about 10 minutes after which the attackers fled towards the nearby
border village of Wellingara in Senegal.
The identity of the armed gang has not been established, but some of the villagers claimed they heard them
speaking English, Mandinka, Wollof and Fula.

Our URD correspondent, Lamin Darboe, said the body of the late Bangali Touray was taken to the URD police
headquarters in Basse at around 11am yesterday and later transferred to Bansang Hospital for a post-mortem.

Sources added that a member of the family of the victim, Momodou Touray, sustained injuries in his head during
the armed attack. URD police commissioner, Famara Jallow, declined to comment on the incident.
Bangali Touray is survived by two wives and at least 10 children.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly Member for Kantora, Omar Camara, has disclosed that a wild hippopotamus at
Koina Tenda has gone on the rampage since Sunday, July 4 and has killed at least five people in four days. He
appealed for help to ease the agony of his people.
