To those who hail from Kombo Sukuta and all students of history,
Is there any such place called Sukoto or Tumbung where old folk in
Sukuta claim to be the old location of the settlement? Tunbung is
Mandinka for ruins. I am aware that in today's Gambia, Sabijee and
Sukuta are very much the same but records suggest the contrary.
According to Francis Bisset Archer, Sabijee was distroyed twice 1853 and
1855 for openly defying the king of Kombo over the creation of British
Kommbo and for harassing settlers (in British Kombo). And Archer went on
to write that in 1856 when peace returned to the region the "original
malcontents of Sabijee" were not permitted to return to British Kombo.
Incidentally Sukuta only appeared in literature about 1890 as one of the
towns allied to Foday Komho Sillah. Does this mean that the people of
Sabijee, settled in Sukuta when they were forced out by the Brits? If so
where were they located? One would imagine that its somewhere in KMC
proper (east of Bakoteh stream). Any help?
