EX GAMSU VEEP DETAINED

Reports reaching the Daily Observer indicate that Alagie Nyabally, a former
vice president of the Gambia Students Union (Gamsu) was picked up by
unidentified men believed to be personnel of the National Intelligence
Agency (NIA), Tuesday, April 10.

He was reported to have been detained at the NIA headquatres in Banjul for
two days. Sources could not state the exact reason for Nyabally's arrest,
but it is widely believed that he was busted in connection with remarks he
made against President Yahya Jammeh at the Gambia Technical Training
Institute (GTTI) last Tuesday during a symposium marking the April 10/11
tragedy.

During a question and answer session of the symposium, Nyabally was quoted
as having said that President Jammeh is a "hypocrite who must be playing
double standards" when a particular student from Basse, URD, disclosed that
the APRC branch in the town was trying to set up a sub-wing at Nasir Senior
Secondary School, resulting to a dispute in the school.

Nyabally, according to sources, based his comments against President Jammeh
on his call on students last year not to politicise their activities during
a meeting with student leaders at Kanilai, a few days after the April 10, 11
tragedy. A high presence of agents of the NIA was reported in the conference
hall, when Nyabally made his blunt comments against the president.

Family sources have reported that Tuesday evening, nine unidentified men
were seen around the vicinity of Nusrat Senior Secondary School, where
Nyabally resides, asking people about his whereabout. He was eventually said
to have been picked up somewhere away from his home at 7 pm.

He was released Thursday, April 12. Berore his release, Gamsu
representatives Thursday afternoon called on the inspector general of
police, Ebou Njie, to secure Nyabally's release. Contacted yesterday,
Nyabally declined to comment on his arrest. Sources said he is scheduled to
report back to the NIA headquaters today.
