Bro,

Kukio was referred to as an accident as far as the events of 30th july are
concerned by the then Moja-G leader,Koro sallah. That is to say the
political situation was such that any opportunist could have inspired a
military coup.We had the unemployment situation, the corruption and brutality
of the PPP regime, the retrecnhment etc.Adding to that was the politically
motivated military coups in the sub-region and more so the radical political
activities in the country.Political opportunist like Kukio will easily be
able to read such a political situation.
Some few people I know and who have known him for years attest to the fact
that he was part of the radical movement in Banjul,so he was not new to the
Gambian political scene. And according to his own speech on that day, he was
a member of a political movement and that some members of that movement were
known to be members of the arm forces. He was not a member of Moja -G.
The Gambian Arm forces was very small compared to the one we have now. Then
also, top military personal were very much part of the status quo and a
military coup will not be something they will fancy.Mahony was perhaps the
only person who we can think of to have had such and ambition and I doubt
very much if he had any,he was murdered before the July coup.I could not
stop thinking that the situation was such that any coup planners in the arm
forces will be looking outside for a leadership, since the believe is that
the leader should be an educated person. The second guess might be that those
in the Arm forces, prepared to lunch a military coup, were not interested in
political power but political change and as it was, many were part of a
political movement or sympathizing with a political
movement/organisation/party opposed to the PPP regime.
At all cost, his crimes against the Gambian people and the country will be
the one we will always remember and he must answer to these crimes.
