THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE ARRESTED: GAMBIANS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY?

BY BINNEH S MINTEH

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

Psychologist from time immemorial, satisfactorily concluded that one symptom of a Schizophrenic Patient is paranoia. In the Gambia, we have a President who is one such patient and in total denial. Gambians for the past few years and few months in particular have witnessed series of arrestation and detentions without any cause or tangible reasons. All this arrestation were carried out under the orders of a President who is above the law, sees himself as a king, and can violate constitutional rights of citizens at anytime and anywhere he is struck by paranoia.

The Gambian constitution does not the least authorize the detention of anyone over unlawful periods of time. The Protection of fundamental Human Rights and Freedom in chapter four, section (19), sub-section (1) of the constitution states:

"Everyone shall have the right to liberty and security of person. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention. No one shall be deprived of his or her liberty except on such grounds and in accordance with such procedures as are established by the law."

Section (19), sub-section (3b) further states "Upon reasonable suspicion of his or her having committed or being about to commit a criminal offence under the laws of The Gambia, and who is not released, shall be brought without undue delay before a court, in any event within seventy-two hours."

Today the Inspector General of Police, the former Director of Immigration and some senior police officers are under detention at the central prisons. The reasons for such an arrestation are best known to President Jammeh. In a truly democratic country, justice must take its cause and we therefore urge President Jammeh to deal with this situation in accordance with the Gambian constitution. No one is here defending anyone else, but what Gambians are interested, is not only crimes (if any) they have committed, but also making sure that there treatment is humane and justice taking its cause.

Fellow Gambians, It should not surprise anyone, if Badgie and Jassey are framed and tainted for being involved in some form of dubious deals. That is the popular winching mechanism for the Jammeh Government to eliminate or get rid of any potential, productive and influential civil servant. When we closely read between the lines, it was after Tamsir Jasseys visit to the United States that he was sacked. Now we have am Inspector General whose interaction with members of the Gambian Press Union, and The Gambian Public in bringing perpetrators and thugs against the media and journalist is seen as a treat. Its time for us to open our eyes, ears by, carefully analyzing this madness, and prepare ourselves to put a complete stop to such childish and immature behavior by a President.

As a Gambian-American, it is my obligation like any other Gambian to speak out when justice is not taking its cause and when the constitution is violated. In that regards, Many International human rights watchdogs have been informed. Any form of torture face by these detainees shall be the responsibility of The Gambian authorities.
