Americas must admit racism exists - U.N. official

SANTIAGO, Dec 5 (Reuters) - The Americas and the Caribbean must admit that
racism exists if they want to overcome it, Mary Robinson, the U.N. high
commissioner for human rights, said on Tuesday.

"If states are not ready to openly acknowledge that racism is a problem, then
there is little hope any meaningful progress can be made," Robinson told a
regional conference in Santiago.

The gathering was called to prepare for the U.N. World Conference Against
Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, to be held
in Durban, South Africa, next year.

Robinson said in her prepared text that "evidence suggests that attitudes
have been changed only marginally and that much remains to be done" in regard
to the region's indigenous people.

Some nations have inadequate protection for their political rights and lack
effective judicial remedies for human rights violations, she said.

Robinson said that African-Americans had been the subject of racial
discrimination in the region and that nondiscriminatory policies also needed
to be implemented for migrants.
