          OPINION What Our Readers Say

December 3, 2005
RE-MEDIA AND CIVIL SOCIETY IN THE GAMBIABy Lamin Sanyang

This article is in respond to Sarjo's analysis of the role of the media and civil society. First to all I know the political view points you trying to promote. But what is not coherently clear is the way you talked about civil society, which is really mystifying. Civil society doesn't mean opposition parties and their role in the Gambia only reflect on your caption and nothing more. This is perhaps one of the most manipulated articles I have ever read. It suffers from simplistic assumptions related to the role of civil society. How do you measure good and bad media? This type of reasoning is dubious in the realm of ethics. it is important to not that the Media or civil society can play two roles- either maintaining and promoting the present political status quo where by increasing the suffering of the people or extricating them from the bundles of slavery. The type of reasoning you highlighted brings us to the consideration of media/civil society that are concerned with rules and
principles that attempt to inform what is right or wrong for a given situation. The underlying principles driving you to write is based on media roles but the article devoted less attention to the caption. Your argument stems from a different perspective, arguing that it is in the interest of the media/civil society to fully utilise the type of subjective analysis you advanced. You have to understand that the Media/civil society are not simple automatic reactions to the Gambia's political circumstances. Rather the Media and civil society emerged from political, economic, social, cultural processes of debate, negotiation and argument among Gambians, and from the way Gambians interpret the circumstances affecting them. the position adopted here both encompasses the view that the role of the media/civil society is about politics (clearly your views are political and not showing negative and positive).

In the Gambia what I am concerned with is fair and ethical treatment of Gambians is important since the way Gambians perceive the way they are treated potentially impacts on their wellbeing

the ethical position adopted by Gambians have a range of options from being ethically muted to being ethically assertive. In recent years we have witness a lot of political changes in The Gambia. I personally appreciated the balance of power and wealth concern you raised in the article. I understand some of the potential implications associated with the Gambia's political situation. Let all put hope on NADD in the coming elections so that Kanilai would be a thing of the past. But try all means to emphasise and relate the caption of your argument with the content of the discussion. Call for violenceBy Augustus Mendy

Dead Editor,
Please allow me a space to express my opinion in your page. First of all i wish to thank each and every one of you who have always contributed to this paper. Personally i have a lot of questions in mind about the integrity of this paper, because a lot of stories written by Pa Ndari Mbai come from nowhere. Where dose he get his sources and how reliable are they??

He wrote a story about the arrest of Edward Singhateh and even Gambians in the Gambia never knew about the issue. How reliable is your story Mr. Mbai?

Mr.Mbai the work of a journalist is to educate, entertain and inform but you have deviated from the above. It because of your educational beground that makes you not adhere to the principles of journalism?

Secondly you were interviewed by radio Tam Tam and your comments about the Gambian's current situation was very uncalled for, because you were calling for violence and calling certain individuals liars.

The above as you very well know dose not fall anywhere in the principles of true journalism. Is because you are in the US? Even the CNN, MSNBC, FOX etc....you watch every day, do you hear any reporter using the language you used?

My opinion to you is give us the true information about the Gambia and not lies. Put education as your priority because you are becoming a very loose cannon in the journalistic boat you are in. Thanks. PLEASE BE MORE REALBy ALH.D.K BAH

Hello my fellow Gambian brothers,
I'll start by telling you i don't like Yahya, don't like the opposition and i do like Gambia very much. I am living in the USA but my whole family is in the Gambia. I read your web site everyday and i do forwarding of your web address to almost a hundred of Gambians so far.

One thing discouraging me about your web site is you going to the extreme now. Particular after the arrest of the Nadd leaders. Threatening Yahya, adding fuel to the fire, talking about Kuokoi Samba Sanyang and just praying for a disaster in the Gambia. I'm sure you're not in the Gambia.

I'm sorry to say, too young to tell you this but i think you're reporting like kids. "Be more matured the way you write". Stop lying to scare Yahya. Let us be serious about the next election. "Talk like a college graduate". That's why we are different from the rest of the world, different from Senegal. We are too informal in whatever we're doing. Like kids. People are too intelligent now-a-days. So know the way you reporting and also write like all the readers are pro-Yahya. It will be more interesting when you talk about both sides. Take sides but report for all to know.

I'll still continue to read and advertise your web page. Thanks. Hope you're not kiang kos. I'm Baddibung ko.
