Y,

I admire your keen sense of appreciation and discernment. I have come to
appreciate Galleh's commentaries as satire's omnibus. He is the vrai ombudsman.

Haruna. Thanks Y.

The Socrates Bashing: rejoinder to Galleh’s debate.

Galleh’s recent bashing on the teacher of old, Socrates is the tear-dripping
summary of Foroyaa’s interview with Madi Ceesay about the Independent
Newspaper. I happened to read Galleh’s piece before reading Foroyaa’s interview,
and as soon as I got done reading Madi’s points, I equally wiped my tears with
Galleh’s nostalgic piece of Socrates. If at all to put it in ink, I am a
long time fan to the Independent. Personally, I think the Independent
proprietors should not loose hope about the leaflets of the Independent flying soon
again. The closure of an institution like the Independent is a clear testimony
of Jammeh’s wish to keep people in the dark. But like I jokingly tell my
friends, you close one Independent, tens of others will emerge; you kill one
Deyda, hundred Deydas will emerge. You then ask: Who is running a profit or
loose? Isn’t it him…Jammeh? But candidly to say, all the good ideas have been
put on line or in print. Papers like Foroyaa and the Point has truly proved to
be great educators of time. We need to pick the pieces together and do action
work. Words alone cannot do it. Words are meant to prepare the people
mentally. That gives courage for action. We are stocked over interpretation of
democracy. Yes, democracy means peaceful advocacy. But we have what is called
self-defense and fighting for sovereignty. Or do we want to believe that
democracy is to let someone keep poking your intestines with a lethal injection
while you keep dreaming about democracy. You got it! What democracy will stop you
poking a someone else’s intestine that is poking yours? God damn him [a
dictator] and all his hims!

I tell you that some Gambians show a tendency worst than Jammeh, as far as
aggression towards the press is concerned or individuals. It is true that
press freedom would mean good journalistic ethics. It would mean fair, balance,
accurate, well investigated stories and carefully written with good choice of
words. The same thing with societal freedom. I see no difference with those
associated with newspapers and those associated with forums. The later has a
tendency to be so irresponsible and exercise a lot of aggression without
accountability. Let us call a spade a spade. Those in the media are doing a good
job. That includes those in these forums as well. Now that doesn’t make them
heroes or perfect. They are equally like those of us contributing in these
forums. The same crimes they commit are the same crimes we daily commit, as far
as character-assassination is concerned [TO THOSE OF THEM THAT DO.] But
Professor Cummings once taught me, “They speak to you like angels and they behave
like stupid human beings.” Take a break and learn about your surrounding with
a mythical leader firing mythical bullets to eliminate us, one by one.

Y...
