Jammeh approves of mass promotion in the army

Reliable sources close to The Gambia National Army (GNA) have confirmed to
The Independent the promotion of 195 soldiers including officers
non-commissioned officers and soldiers with effect from January 1st 2001.
The sources confirmed the promotion from captain to major of Omar B Mbye and
Lang Tombong Tamba and also the promotion from lieutenant to captain of
Saikou Seckan and Salieu Dem. Ebou Sambou of the Yundum Barracks was also
promoted from sergeant to W02 while five corporals also from the 1st
infantry battalion of the Yundum Barracks were promoted to the rank of
sergeant. Four Lance Corporals were promoted to corporal and a member of 26
Privates to Lance Corporals. At the second infantry battalion in Farafenni,
corporal Momodou Lamin Bojang and Gibril Jammeh were promoted to the rank of
sergeant while 18 Lance Corporals were promoted to corporals.

Eleven Privates were also promoted to Lance Corporal in the same barracks
where four Privates were promoted as Lance Corporals. Momodou St Jammeh,
Ebrima Jaw, and Foday Jallow of the guards Battalion in Fajara barracks were
also promoted to the rank of sergeant while Yankuba Kolley and Yusupha T
Saidy were promoted to the rank of Corporal. 16 Privates were also promoted
to Lance Corporal at the Fajara barracks. At the state guard in State House
in Banjul Omar Colley, Mam Biran Sam and Faraba Sabally were also promoted
to W02 while three sergeants and nine corporals were also promoted. 33
others at State House went in for promotion. The GAF camp soldiers also got
promoted and Kebba Jabang, Landing Colley and Malang Jarju were elevated to
sergeant and SSGT respectively while 37 others received promotion. Eight
GAFTS soldiers at the Faraja barracks were also promoted to various
positions. In a Gambia government gazette signed by J. Belford, Department
for Defence President Jammeh Commander-in- Chief of the Armed forces had
appended his approval for the promotions.
