Congratulations Baba.
Unfortunately there is no mention of who published Angry Laughter in the
story. Kindly help with that information. Given what is taking place in
Gambia, your book seems more than timely.

Sidibeh

Baba Galleh Jallow Authors New Book

The Independent (Banjul)

The founder editor and CEO of The Independent Baba Galleh Jallow, has
released Angry Laughter, a book on African politics written in the witty
Orwellian genre of Animal Farm.
Angry Laughter is clearly the most biting political parody to come out
of Africa, according to one reviewer of the book, the second after Dying
for my Daughter, which was published last year.
Angry Laughter is a witty and wisecracking tale of dark political
intrigues and betrayal between Africans and their leaders. Baba Galleh
Jallow, a former editor of The Independent tells the story of the last
ten days of an inept and corrupt civilian regime and its removal and
replacement by a group of semi-illiterate military ?saviors,? who turned
out to be far more corrupt and brutal than their civilian predecessors.
While exceedingly funny and somewhat light-hearted, Angry Laughter is an
otherwise poignant and tragic story, seeking to awaken Africans to the
politics of crazy despots, the sorry plight of Africa's oppressed
masses, the mortifying dangers of civil war and the continent's
"nauseating" politics of banditry and brutality.
In an aside with The Independent, Mr. Jallow said there is an urgent
need for aspiring writers and journalists to record the events of
history for current and future generations. "It is clear that people
particularly those in positions of power and authority, like to take
their fellow but less privileged human beings for granted. They abuse
their power and hold whole populations to ransom, against their will, in
contravention of norms and dictates of the social contract. They create
the conditions for conflict and refuse to share the responsibility of
moving the machinery of state forward, even though they have absolutely
no idea how to do this themselves" he posited.
He added: "Writers should be there to record their ugly deeds so that
history can judge them. It is high time that African despots are exposed
for what they really are and this is what Angry Laughter seeks to do."
Baba Galleh Jallow holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and
Political Science from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.
He has published hundreds of short stories in newspapers in The Gambia.
He was Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Observer and founder editor of The
Independent newspaper.
From November 2000 to June 2003, he worked as editor of the
Washington-based online media group, AllAfrica.com. From then, on to
March 2004, he was Associate Coordinator for the Africa Program, Peace
Building Unit of the Quakes Humanitarian Organisation, the American
Friends Service Committee at its headquarters in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Liberal
Studies at Rutgers University, Camden, New Jersey.
Angry Laugher is his second book. His first, Dying for My Daughter deals
with the thorny issue of female circumcision in an African society,
where gender stereotypes are still rooted in tradition.
