UN/CUBA
UN Says "No" to US Blockade against Cuba
United Nations, Nov 4 (PL) The UN General Assembly declared itself in favor of putting an end to the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba by an overwhelming majority vote Tuesday.
A resolution adopted here got a record 179 votes in favor, three against –US, Israel and Marshall Islands- and two abstentions.

This resolution reminded the statements by the Heads of State and Government at Ibero-American Summits on the need to remove the unilateral enforcement of economic and commercial measures, which may affect free development of international trade.

It also expressed its concern for the adoption of laws and acts like the Helms-Burton, which affect sovereignty of other countries, their legitimate interests, as well as those of entities and private individuals under their jurisdiction, free trade and navigation.

In consequence, the resolution reaffirms its call to all nations to abstain from doing any such actions, and abrogate or annul any such existing action in the shortest time possible.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was requested to draft a briefing on the present resolution "in view of the purposes and principles of the UN Magna Carta, international rights and submit it to the UN General Assembly’s next period of sessions."

In that way, this topic is included in the agenda for next year as topic of permanent interest.
