EDITORIAL:THE AFRICAN UNION SHOULD RELOCATE THE BANJUL SUMMIT!!!
      EDITORIAL
Banjul is far from stable contrary to President Jammeh’s claims that the country was in good shape to host the African Union Summit. We are calling on the African Union to relocate the much talked about Summit to another stable country, in the Sub-region. The internal differences within the army and various security agencies are clear example for the Summit to be moved to another country. Hosting the Summit is a good thing for our country, but we should always remember that in the absence of peace, there cannot be any meaningful development. Jammeh, should focus on peace and economic maintenance, as the two are badly lacking in The Gambia today.

Jammeh, had been bragging about the hosting of the said important event, but one think he failed to realize is that the money is not there to sponsor the event. Perhaps, his Taiwanese friends will give him some millions of dollars to host the event. Already, he has started importing latest vehicles into the country. The Hummer talk in Banjul, is an example. It doesn’t make sense to have such expensive vehicles when our people are starving to death.
The AU Secretariat, should send a fact finding mission to Banjul to asses the situation before the Summit. The recent reports of alleged foiled coup and its ring leader on the run is a cause for concern. We do not want the AU delegates to be exposed to any security threat. From now on, Jammeh need to put his house in order to prove to the AU and other visitors that The Gambia is safe and stable. There are a lot of things going on in The Gambia and for one to think that the country is stable is a joke. Besides, the division in the army, the civil populace are pissed off with dictator Jammeh. We are in serious trouble these days. We hope and pray that this onetime peaceful country, is not turned into another Liberia and Sierra Leone. The UN and other humanitarian organizations should start focusing their attention to this impoverished nation.
Few months ago, a renowned and well respectable Gambian political Science professor Dr. Abdoulaye Saine, made a similar call, citing national security issues. Today, Dr. Saine is vindicated. The whole nation was brought to halt last Tuesday, when the office of the Presidency claimed to have aborted a foiled coup. That the ring leader Ndure Cham was on “the run and dangerous.” Professor Saine, knew what he was talking about at the time. His piece is still fresh in the minds of Gambians. Other Gambians, including this paper had time and time hinted that The Gambia was far from stable as being bandit by Jammeh and his government.
Now the government says Ndure Cham’s whereabouts was unknown. Remember, he who run away, live to fight back one day. Ndure is said to be a well trained soldier and should not be underestimated in any way. We have seen the former Kartong attackers resurfacing in The Gambia after years in the bush. LT. Jarju, LT. Jammeh and Bah were braved enough to come back to accomplish their mission despite the dangers ahead of them. Let Jammeh joke with the civil populace, but the reality is that “once a soldier is always a soldier.”
The current division in the army should not be taken lightly. We are faced with a major security problem. Some of us calling on the AU to relocate the Summit, are not bad citizens, as implied by the Jammeh camp. We loved The Gambia more than Yahya Jammeh and his followers. The Gambia is not qualified to host the event in view of the ailing security situation in that country. We rest our case.
