I am no computer expert but it looks like this problem of malicious
attachments cannot be solved by any one group or subscriber in isolation.

Some months ago I had similar problems with my home computer. I received
from Yusupha Jow that I sent him some mail with attachment. Since I do not
use that machine for any of my Gambia-l activities I became aware that it
may have been infected. It is true that most of these malicious codes take
advantage of outlook's address book and randomly send messages to any
address in the address book. Updating my software and ensuring regular virus
scanning took care of it.

I am suggesting that every subscriber do their part in ensuring that they
scan their machines regularly with the latest anti-virus software. I
understand this may be a particularly difficult problem for our colleagues
in the Gambia where connectivity is slow and regular free updates may not be
readily available. In any case it requires our combine effort.

Subject: Virus information

Gambia-L,
I received a mail from Brother Kabir just a moment ago because he received
an email
with Gambia-L manager's address as the sender. Looking at the mail header
below,
one can see that the virus was sent from The Gambia. The person is using a
dialup
account from Quantum.

It is from one [log in to unmask] but the "From" address has gambia-l-request
<[log in to unmask]>.

For your information, The <[log in to unmask]> address
is an
alias at St. Johns and only sends mails to all listmanager's individual
e-mail
accounts. So in reality no list manager has that as the sender in their mail
program.
Therefore, try to see the details of the mail header to see the origin
whenever you
receive a suspicious mail. There are viruses circulating the internet and
some of them
have a false sender's addresses.

Make sure that your antivirus program is updated because there are people
with bad
intentions who make or send these viruses.

Momodou Camara
