Here's an indirect independent confirmation that the Jammeh government
has equipment to eavesdrop on, at least, your telephone converstaions.
Something we all knew was happening but this article reinforces the
evidence that they may be doing so. Read on:

Minister Patricia Kaliati lies about the spy machine in parliament
Created 02/12/2011 - 16:12

Minister of Information and Civic Education Patricia Kaliati told the
parliament that despite fears from some sectors of the society, the
spy machine, has no capability to intercept people’s conversations.

She said government just want to ensure quality service compliance and
that phone operators should not defraud government from tax revenue.

However, this is not true.

The CIRMS (spy) machine apart from recording call transaction data has
the capacity to intercept calls using a feature appropriately named
'Lawful Intercept'. The Minister can do better by assuring the house
that this feature will not be used for spying.

Meanwhile Nkhotakota Central MP Edwin Banda told parliament he is in
possession of private email conversations as proof that the CIRMS
device is meant for use in privacy abuse.

Banda says he personally saw and read the e-mails intercepted by the
Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) the institution
that is heralding the project.

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jones Chingola has since ordered
Mr. Banda to submit the e-mails as evidence of his claims observing
that the parliamentarian was making a serious allegation.

The actual cost of the machine also produce heated debate in the house
as members allege that shabby dealings were involved when procuring
the machine.

Blantyre Rural East MP Henry Phoya said countries like Gambia and
Gabon bought the same type of machine at less than US$2million and
wondered why MACRA paid US6.5million.

He said the whole procurement procedure is questionable as it has not
even passed thorough the procurement department.
