FYI
The ousted president of the West African state of Guinea
Bissau, Joao Bernardo Vieira, has been allowed to go to
             Gambia.

He'd taken refuge in the Portuguese embassy in Guinea
Bissau after he was overthrown last month.

Portugal has already granted him political asylum.

The new Guinea Bissau government, led by the former
military commander Ansumane Mane, is reported to
have agreed to allow Mr Vieira to leave for medical
             treatment.

The BBC West Africa correspondent says it marks the
end of a dramatic year in the history of the small former
Portuguese colony, after a coup d'etat, foreign army
interventions and the fleeing of hundreds of thousands
             from fighting in the capital.

From the newsroom of the BBC World Service
