Ms. Joh, you raised a valid point that also need to be addressed by the
Decree 89 politicians amid all the euphoria. Back in March I remember
writing about a government White (Toilet) Paper that the mental midget
(Joseph Joof) was trying to peddle. If my memory serves me right, certain
former politicians (including Jawara) were singled out and accused of
corruption and banned from participating in politics for a certain amount of
time. If I recollect well, the charges against Jawara were laughable. The
White Paper talked about Jawara transferring his life savings of 16 thousand
pounds sterling as the corrupt activity that warranted his proscription. No
mention of the ‘Crude Oil’ deal the AFPRC government initially tried to pin
on Jawara. Clearly, this illegal government had nothing on Jawara and his
people in light of the millions of dollars Yaya stole from us.

At the time, I think I mentioned that Joseph Joof was trying to achieve
through this White Paper what was no longer defensible under Decree 89.
According to reports, Yaya’s utterances on July 22, 2001 amount to very
little legally speaking. De facto, the Dictatorship in the country is such
that whatever Yaya says is the law. But we all know that saying that Decree
89 is history at a political rally is one thing. Allowing politicians to
partake in free and fair elections is a totally different thing. Apparently,
Yaya simply called at his rubber-stamps at the Parliament to come up with a
way of repealing Decree 89. This envisages a situation where Joseph Joof
drafts a law and present it before Parliament for the revocation of the
Decree. But the funny thing is that, there is really nothing to revoke.
Decree 89 is repugnant to our Constitution. It was revoked as soon as the
Constitution was made law of the land. This is why we always counseled OJ et
al to defy the Decree and go about their political business. The courts
should have made this pronouncement years ago. Decree 89 is NOTHING. But we
all know the lawlessness in the country. This is all cosmetics. A gimmick.

Whether it is Decree 89 or Joseph Joof’s White Paper, the bottom line is,
Gambians should NOT allow Yaya to ban them. Go about your business and see
whether the moron will be aggressive towards you. No court worth its salt
will enforce Decree 89 or Joseph Joof’s ‘toilet’ Paper.
