A TRIBUTE TO SISTER SATANG

Fatoumatta Jahumpa has been calling on our sisters and mothers to mark this
day, March 8th by singing praise to President Jammeh. She never mention a
single reason for our sisters to do so, other than that, President Jammeh did
declare free education for girls in the country. That free tuition fee is
different from free education is only a problem for a fool to understand.
Perhaps, one should remind this woman that it was her President who was
telling women activist that he could not guarantee their security and this was
the very reason why some of us were never surprised when Sister Satang was
falsely arrested and accused of been suspected for drug peddling. It was only
her close friends who knew the hell that this great sister was going through.

No doubt, there are many “Ladies” in history and in the struggle of today who
have used their being a woman, not to advance the struggle of their sisters
but their own personal interest. If such women, dared to misuse such a great
day it should not be a surprise to us. Perhaps this was the very reason why
Sister Satang was very much concerned with working closely with people who are
committed and sincere to the struggle. With her great experience, she knew
that “opportunism”is a fact that must be handled. She told a fellow sister, in
my presence, that only if they women are prepared to take that extra mile for
themselves and for humanity, in fact, no one, no one will do it for them, and
get to understand that the struggle for empowerment and the emancipation of
women could only be carried out by women themselve. Her passion and commitment
to the gender struggle must not be seen as the only arena to which she
committed her self. Satang was very much concerned with the day-to-day
suffering of the Gambian people in general, it pains her but she was also
hopeful.
When she speaks, she does this with much authority; she was a woman of
principles and dignity. On this day, we salute all those who have been closely
working with Sister Satang both at home and away.
