LAGOS, Sept 28 (AFP) - The west African regional body ECOWAS has received a
grant for feasibility study on a railway network for the region, an
official statement said Saturday.
The approval for the 3.31-million-dollar project from the African
Development Fund followed a master plan by the 15-member countries of the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), it said.
In July 1994, the ECOWAS council of ministers approved the master plan
for integrated railway lines for countries of the region.
The west African body will provide 66,000 dollars in counterpart funding
for the project expected to last 14 months beginning in September 2003, it
added.
The study will examine the institutional and operational framework for a
single railway system in west Africa, ECOWAS said.
It said the study will also seek private sector participation in the
project through the interconnection of existing inter-state networks.
