Mr D.A Jawo,
President,
Gambia Press Union
May 20, 2004

Dear Mr D.A Jawo,

It was gathered from certain credible sources that, aside from the Observer
Newspaper, there is infact a total media blackout in The Gambia. That all the
other Gambian newspapers have not registered as stipulated by the Media Bill
and are not in print right now .

Are these newspapers protesting the passage of this bill by refusing to
register or is the reason perhaps the very real fear that any journalist can be
charged with any number of criminal charges by the all powerful Media Commission
should they write anything that the this Commssion considers an affront to
whatever charges they can dream up?
Your valued imput as President of the Gambia Press Union will help to keep
Gambians in the Diaspora as well as all freedom of information loving people
all over the World abreast of what could be a very grave situation in our
country.
We sincerely hope you will oblige us with some clarifications and information
on the situation.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jabou Joh
